Frequently Asked Questions
Issue: What version of Acrobat Reader is needed to view the OSEs?
Solution: The online versions are best viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 5.x. You can download Acrobat Reader for free by going to www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.
Issue: I lost my username and/or password.
Solution:For Teachers: Please register again and you will receive a new username/password.
For Students: Contact your instructor for the username/password.
Issue: I have already registered for the username and password and am being asked to re-register. Why?
Solution: The Online Student Editions (OSE's) available on our book Web sites will be receiving an upgrade to the registration system. This upgrade will occur on October 1, 2007. If you are a current Glencoe customer and user of our programs, you will be directed to re-register for your textbook access.
Teachers: If your school or district has purchased print student editions, register now to access the full online version of the book. Once you have registered, you can add books to your profile and distribute access codes to your students. You may distribute only the same number of access codes as the number of print student editions purchased.
Issue: I used the username and password before, but now they do not work.
Solution: Usernames and passwords are no longer case sensitive. If you are a teacher and continue to have issues, please register again. Note: Sometime the number zero is mistaken for the letter “O”.
Issue: When I tried to access a page the operation timed out.
Solution: Dial-up modems may not be fast enough to access the online student editions. A high speed internet connection will produce the best performance.
Issue: When I tried to register I get the message “The Book Title and/or ISBN you entered do not correlate.”
Solution: Make sure that you enter the ISBN for the student edition and select the matching book title and edition year. Note: Different state textbooks have different ISBNs and will be listed separately if available.
Issue: How do I configure the Student Editions to work with my browser?
Solution: If you are using Windows configure your browser to use Acrobat Reader as a plug-in, please visit the sites below:

Issue: I have a Glencoe book, but I do not see an online student edition for my copyright year.
Solution: Not all of the Glencoe textbooks have an online edition. You may want to contact your sales representative to see if one will be available soon.
Issue: How do I view the Online Student Editions on the MAC?
Solution: If using MAC OS 9 or earlier configure your browser to use Acrobat Reader as a plug-in.

Configuring Internet Explorer for Mac OS to Display PDF Files:

Issue: Are the Student Editions compatible with MAC OS X?
Solution: Running Acrobat Reader from within the Internet browser (Internet Explorer and Netscape) is not supported on MAC OS X. Using MAC OS 9.x or earlier will allow you to view the online student editions.
Customers can try the PDF Browser Plug-In which is available from http://www.schubert-it.com/download/. There are different versions of the plug-in available for certain versions of Mac OS X. Because this is a third party plug-in, we cannot support the installation or use of this plug-in, nor can we guarantee that it will resolve the issue in all cases.
Issue: Error: The specified file docs/***.pdf does not exist.
Solution: Clear all off-line content, history and cookies. In Internet Explorerthis can be done by selecting the Tools menu then Internet Options. Within this menu select Delete Cookies. In addition, click on Delete Files. A second window will appear in which you will want to select the box next to Delete all Offline Content and click Ok. Finally, click on Clear History. In Netscape, you will go to Preferences.
If that does not work try these steps:
1. Open Acrobat Reader 6.0 (this also works with 7.0).
2. Click on Edit and then Preferences.
3. Click on Internet (on the left side of the screen).
4. Uncheck Display PDF in browser and click the OK button at the bottom.
5. Follow steps 2-3 again only this time recheck the Display PDF in browser box.
6. Click OK then exit Acrobat.
Start Internet Explorer and log back into the OSE; the pages should now all be visible.
You could also download a fresh installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.
Issue: When registering for one of the Online Student Editions (OSE) you receive the following error: Please ensure that one (and only one) book title is selected from the pull down menus.
Solution: Be sure that you click your book only and do not select the dashed options from the other drop downs, these count as selections. Simply reselect your book only.
Issue: I am trying to find a reading selection, but it is not listed.
Solution: Due to the cost of obtaining permission for the selections, some items are not available in the OSE.
Issue: Can you download/print/edit the OSE?
Solution: Since this is copyrighted material, the documents are protected to prevent any of these functions.
Issue: I have Windows 98, and I cannot download Adobe Reader 6.0 so I can use the Online Student Editions for 2005.
Solution: Per Adobe’s website, if you are using Windows 98, it says you can download Acrobat Reader 5.0. If you have Windows 98SE (Second Edition) it will allow you to download Adobe Reader 6.0.1.
Issue: I receive the error “403 Access Denied” when accessing the OSE.
Solution: We typically see this issue on a Windows computer using the new Firefox browser or on a MAC OSX machine. Please see below if this is the case:
MAC OSX:
We have been continuing our research on the Online Student Editions (OSE) on their issue with OSX machines. We are recommending a 3rd party plug in that may assist with using the OSEs. We can not guarantee that this will solve the issue nor do we support the use of the plug-in.
You can go to http://www.schubert-it.com/download/ and download the PDF Browser Plug-in. Please check for the correct plug-in for your OSX version.
The overall situation resides when using OSX and PDF files within an internet browser. This issue is not limited to Glencoe’s Online Student Editions. It is a known issue with MAC internet browsers viewing the PDF files within the browser window.
Windows:
Users that have I.E. and Acrobat Reader 6.0 should not run across any 403 errors when using the Online Student Editions. If a user is on a Windows machine using the Firefox or Netscape browser they may run across this issue. The recommended browser for Windows machines is Internet Explorer.
If a Windows user with I.E. does encounter this issue, please clear the cache and reboot the computer before trying again.
